Kobe Tran joins BYU men's tennis

PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s tennis head coach Dave Porter announced the addition of Kobe Tran to the team’s roster today. Tran was a member of the team for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons—which included an 8-3 singles record his freshman year—before taking a break from tennis.

Tran returns with two years of eligibility remaining. He joins the team ahead of BYU’s first dual match on Jan. 20, which he will be able to compete in.

"I am thrilled to have Kobe Tran back," Coach Porter said. "He is a wonderful young man who is working hard on his academics and tennis. He will make a positive addition to the team."

A native of Union City, Calif., Tran amassed a 55-4 prep record at James Logan High School, winning a singles section championship his junior year. A four-year varsity starter, Tran finished in the top three of the North Coast Section in singles all four years. He was a four-star, top-100 recruit in the class of 2018.

In addition to his 8-3 singles record as a freshman at BYU, Tran went 2-1 in doubles. The COVID-19 pandemic then shortened the 2019-20 season.
