BYU concludes ITA Mountain Regionals

PROVO, Utah — The BYU men's tennis team wrapped up its first tournament of the 2021-22 season at the ITA Mountain Regionals on Saturday. 

The hosts finished 12-10 in singles and 6-5 in doubles competition. 

No. 5 seed Jack Barnett, who started the first round of play with a bye, swept through his first two matches in two sets each before falling to the No. 2 seed and eventual tournament champion Franco Capalbo (University of Utah) 7-5, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

No. 32 seed Matheus Leite won his first three matches, finishing his tournament in the round of 16 after losing to Bodin Zarkovic (Utah State University) 6-4, 6-4.

Barnett and Leite (ranked No. 3) also advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles play where they were knocked out by NAU’s Eban Straker-Meads and Facundo Tumosa, 8-3. 

Brigham Andrus, Josh Pearce and Alex Lin each exited the singles competition in the first round. 

Otto Schreiner, Mateo Vereau and Dominik Jakovljević won their first matches in singles play before falling in the second round. Jakovljević and Vereau edged No. 12 ranked Jordan Azuma and Robert Baylon in a first-round upset 8-7 (4) progressing to the round of 32. 

New BYU transfers Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs shined in their BYU debut, entering the tournament as the No. 14 seed in doubles and advancing to the round of 32. Fuchs also reached the round of 32 in singles, finishing with a 2-1 record.
