Four Cougars receive WCC All-Academic honors

SAN MATEO, Calif. – Sean Hill, Ben Gajardo, Sam Tullis and Matheus Ferreira Leite were recognized for their success both in the classroom and on the court when West Coast Conference announced its 2021 All-Academic honors on Wednesday.

All four BYU men's tennis student-athletes were named Academic All-WCC Honorable Mention. They also finished the season with the four highest singles wins for the Cougars.

Leite, a civil engineering major, held a 3.52 GPA this semester. The junior from São Paulo, Brazil finished the season with a 9-5 singles record. Leite went on a five-match win streak this season and earned the match-clinching victory on Senior Day against Utah. 

Tullis, a graduate senior hailing from Centerville, Utah, went 11-6 in singles this season. Studying accounting, Tullis maintained a 3.34 GPA. Tullis, who went on win streaks of three and four this season, clinched the sweep over San Francisco during BYU's seven-match win streak.

Hill, also a graduate senior, earned a 3.28 GPA, majoring in economics. From Berkeley, California, Hill led the Cougars this year, going 17-3 in singles. With three wins over ranked opponents and an All-WCC First Team Singles honoree, Hill also qualified for the NCAA Singles Championships.

Gajardo, from Las Vegas, Nevada, had the second-most singles wins for BYU, finishing with a 14-3 record. The senior, also an economics major, held a 3.26 GPA. Gajardo was named All-WCC Singles Honorable Mention and All-WCC First Team Doubles.
