Cougars wrap up play at ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains

Colorado Springs, Colo. – Three BYU men’s tennis players concluded singles and doubles play on Saturday at the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains.

“Thanks to Air Force for hosting us and for running a great event," BYU assistant coach Aidan Carrazedo said. “We got a lot better this week, we will use this as a springboard into more fall tournaments, and learn from our play and become a better team because of it.”

Doubles Draw

Vinicius Feijao Nogueira and Kobe Tran competed as a doubles duo while Garret Vincent paired up with Weber State University’s Bo-Han Li. In the round of 32, both doubles duos came out with wins. Nogueira and Tran defeated Martin Simecek and Luis Flores of New Mexico State University (NMSU), 6-3, and Vincent and Li topped the University of Montana’s Milo Benn and Jack Yount, 6-3.

In the round of 16, Nogueira and Tran fell, 1-6, to the Air Force Academy’s Patrick Sklenka and Jonathan Mascagni. Vincent and Li dropped their match against Louis Menard and Jordy Visser of NMSU, 4-6.

The two pairs participated in consolation matches following the round of 16. Nogueira and Tran lost to Max Korkh and Ludvig Hallgren of Montana, 4-6, while Vincent and Li fell, 3-6, to Northern Arizona University’s (NAU) Chris Steele and Alexander Groves.

Singles Blue Draw

Tran and Nogueira both lost their first match in the round of 32, sending them to the consolation bracket. Tran dropped the match, 3-6, 3-6, to Simecek of NMSU and Nogueira fell in three sets to the University of Denver’s Ignatius Castelino, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.

In the consolation round of 16, Tran faced Korkh of Montana and lost in a tiebreaker set at 6-3, 4-6, 6-10. Nogueira dropped his match against NMSU’s Visser, 1-6, 3-6.

The two Cougars participated in additional consolation matches. Tran was up, 3-6, 6-3, 9-6, against Alexander Groves of NAU before he retired from the match. Nogueira fell in two sets to Montana’s Hallgren 4-6, 1-6.

Singles Silver Draw

Vincent faced Benn of Montana in the round of 32 and lost in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 3-6. In the consolation round of 16, Vincent handily defeated NAU’s Mikael Purne 6-2, 6-4.

After a hard battle against Air Force’s Jordan Azuma, Vincent fell 5-7, 6-4, 10-7, in the consolation quarterfinals.

The Cougars will travel to the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Oct. 7-12, for the second year in a row.
