4-0 sweep over San Francisco gives No. 33 BYU undefeated record at home
PROVO, Utah – No. 33 BYU men’s tennis swept San Francisco 4-0 at home on Friday to close out their home matches with an undefeated 12-0 record.
The last time the Cougars held a perfect record at home was six years ago.
“We still have a lot of important matches ahead of us but finishing undefeated at home was an amazing accomplishment and these guys deserve it,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. “It couldn’t have been a better final home match, going undefeated, having our seniors perform so well and having a great crowd. It was the perfect ending to our home match season.”
BYU honored its two seniors, Matthew Pearce and Jeffrey Hsu, at the end of the match. Both seniors claimed doubles and singles victories to close out their BYU career at home.
The Cougars (17-3, 6-1 WCC) started strong and claimed the doubles point over the Dons (3-13, 0-6 WCC).
No. 42 Sean Hill and Hsu closed a win at No. 1 doubles with a 6-2 finish over Oz Daniel and Phuc Huynh. Mateo Vereau Melendez and Pearce clinched the point when they defeated Nitzan Ricklis and Romeo M. Jivraj 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Up 1-0 going into singles play, BYU kept their momentum and won three consecutive singles matches.
Hsu claimed the first win at No. 2 singles with a quick 6-2, 6-2 defeat over USF's Paul Giraud. Ben Gajardo followed with a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniel at No. 5 singles. Pearce clinched the sweep when he topped David Woodland 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
The Cougars finish out the regular season on the road against WCC foes Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine next week on Friday and Saturday. Live stats and a live stream will be available on the men’s tennis schedule page.
