PROVO, Utah – The No. 42 BYU men’s tennis team claimed a 4-3 upset victory over West Coast Conference foe No. 24 San Diego on Saturday.

“My heart is full,” Head Coach Brad Pearce said. “It was just an incredible team effort. We talked about fighting like dragons and, you know, we did that today. I just couldn’t be more proud of these guys.”

The Cougars (16-3, 5-1 WCC) came back after losing at No. 3 doubles to claim the first point after wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. No. 44 doubles Sean Hill and Jeffery Hsu downed San Diego’s Nico Borter and Gui Osorio in a quick 6-1 match. To clinch the point, BYU’s Sam Tullis and Ben Gajardo upset No. 46 duo Joel Gamerov and August Holmgren, 6-4.

The Toreros came out fighting in singles, tying the match at 1-1 when BYU’s Mateo Vereau fell to Gamerov 4-6, 1-6 in the No. 3 position. However, the Cougars’ No. 1 singles Hill reclaimed the lead in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory over San Diego’s Holmgren. Soon after, BYU’s Tullis added to the lead with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 overthrow against Borter in the No. 4 position.

The match was tied at 3-3 after the Cougars’ Hsu dropped a 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 1-6 No. 2 singles match to the Toreros’ No. 67 Osorio and BYU’s Gajardo fell in No. 5 singles to David Norfeldt, 6-3, 6-7, 6-7.

Pearce fought hard and won in a tight 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) No. 6 singles match against San Diego’s Guus Koevermans to clinch the match for the Cougars.
