PROVO, Utah – An overall team effort helped BYU men's tennis defeat Weber State 6-1 Friday at the Indoor Tennis Courts.

"I think those who came and saw tonight's match could see that this is a well-prepared team," BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. "We're a very deep team this year, every single guy that got the opportunity to play today looked like they had an end of season match. Weber State was a good team and I thought they played well in every position."

"We're excited to have some wins and some momentum going into our match tomorrow. I'm really happy for the guys, they put in a lot of work. All of them came back early from the holidays to be prepared and it's just fun to see them have success right off the bat. We're excited for tomorrow," added Pearce.

The Cougars (1-0) came out strong and claimed the doubles point over the Wildcats (0-1). Sam Tullis and Ben Gajardo secured a 6-2 win in No. 2 doubles against Paul Ohde and Cezary Walkusz, while the BYU doubles duo of Matthew Pearce and Mateo Vereau Melendez earned a 6-1 win in the No. 3 spot over Nick Werner and Bo-Han Li. After battling back-and-forth at the No. 1 spot, Sean Hill and Jeffrey Hsu topped Michiel Van Schoor and Kris Van Wyk 6-4.

Up 1-0, BYU won five-consecutive singles matches. Melendez defeated Van Schoor 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles, while Tullis topped Werner 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot. In the No. 1 singles spot, Hill went to work and earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Van Wyk. Jeffrey followed with a solid 6-3, 6-3 win over Weber's No. 2 player, Junhao Ye. Gajardo defeated Ohde 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot to seal the Cougar victory.

Weber State's Li topped Vinicius Feijao Nogueira in a tiebreaker 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 in No. 6 singles to earn the Wildcats' lone point.

The Cougars remain at home to take on in-state rival Utah on Saturday, January 12, at 5:30 p.m. MT at the BYU Indoor Courts. Live stats and a live feed of the courts will be available on the men's tennis schedule page.
