John Pearce receives Kimball Memorial Award at annual Y Awards
PROVO, Utah – John Pearce of BYU men’s tennis received the Kimball Memorial Award at the 2017 Y Awards ceremony held March 29 at the Marriott Center.
The Kimball Memorial Award is given to the BYU athlete with the highest grade point average.
“Considering our practice and travel schedule, and the time commitment that collegiate tennis requires to be successful, accomplishing what he has in the classroom as a student-athlete has been an amazing achievement and is a testament to his discipline and work ethic,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said.
Pearce, a junior majoring in economics, has proven to be competitive both on the court and in the classroom as he has maintained a 3.93 GPA. The Provo, Utah native was named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic Team and the WCC Gold Honor Roll during the 2015-16 season. A two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete, Pearce broke into the national doubles rankings at No. 58 earlier this season with teammate Jacob Sullivan and has recorded two WCC Doubles Team of the Week honors. Pearce led the team with 16 doubles victories as a sophomore and has been co-captain of the BYU men's tennis team two years in a row.
“John has been a key contributor to our team since his freshman year, and since his return from his mission,” Coach Pearce said. “He’s a fierce competitor, hates losing and has clinched a lot of matches for us through the years.”
Pearce was one of sixteen student-athletes, two coaches, six teams and one volunteer who were honored as part of this year’s Y Awards. To see a complete list of Y Award winners, click here.
