PROVO, Utah -- BYU men's tennis has announced the signing of Las Vegas native Ben Gajardo for the 2017-18 season.

“Ben has a big serve and forehand, and he’s technically sound in every aspect of the game whether it’s from the baseline or up at net,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. "He also has a big presence on the court with his physical play and demeanor. And he is a great competitor. He is the total package."

Gajardo is currently ranked No. 1 in the state of Nevada. As a two-time state champion, Gajardo has been one of the most dominant players in the Intermountain section throughout his junior career. He recently jumped to No. 84 in the national rankings by winning and being a finalist in the last two national tournaments he’s played.

A senior at Deseret Oasis High School, Gajardo is coached by Tim Blenkiron and former BYU tennis star Patrick Kawka at the No Quit Tennis Academy.

“I’m looking forward to continuing my development under coach Pearce’s wing with his background as a former world-class player along with his track record of developing individual players and building successful teams,” Gajardo said. “Along with being sold on coach Pearce’s credentials, I chose BYU for the great environment, positive atmosphere and the combination of great academics and athletics. I can’t wait to be a BYU Cougar."

Gajardo was also recruited by University of San Diego and University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

"I have great respect for his parents, Miguel and Katrin, both from Chile, who I’ve had the pleasure to get to know through the recruiting process," Pearce said. "They have taught Ben and his siblings well; he is a very good fit for our program and BYU in every respect. I am absolutely delighted that Ben and his family chose BYU."
