BYU defeats Sacramento State for first road win

MANOA, Hawai'i--In its first road match of 2016, the BYU men's tennis team defeated Sacramento State 4-0 in Hawai'i, Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars (2-0) started the match strong by winning the doubles point. The team of Andrey Goryachkov and Jeremy Bourgeois upset the Hornets' number one doubles team of Kasparas Zemaitelis and Mikus Losbergs, 6-2. They are currently the No. 30 doubles team in the nation.

After Goryachkov and Bourgeois's win, Jacob Sullivan and John Pearce defeated Christopher Clayton and Uli Vollath 6-2 to claim the second win needed for the doubles point. Keaton Cullimore and Shane Monroe's doubles match did not finish but they were leading 5-4.

BYU took down Sacramento State (1-1) quickly in singles play. Goryachkov defeated Zermaitelis 6-0, 6-2 for the first singles point. Shortly after his win, Monroe beat Joaquin Marquez 6-2, 6-3 for the Cougars' third point total. Bourgeois and JD Malan finished their matches around the same time to complete the sweep. Malan defeated Dom Miller 6-2, 6-0 and Bourgeois defeated Donald Hall 6-3, 6-3. Cullimore, John Pearce and Sullivan did not finish their matches.

The Cougars remain in Hawai'i for one more match against the University of Hawai'i on Monday morning. Check byucougars.com for results of the match.
