Pearce advances in singles and doubles draw at ITA Regionals

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – BYU sophomore John Pearce advanced in the singles draw in day one of the ITA Regionals bracket by defeating the University of Montana's Semion Branzburg 6-3, 6-0 Wednesday morning. Pearce also advanced in the doubles draw.

Pearce joins teammates Shane Monroe, Andrey Goryachkov, Keaton Cullimore, Jeremy Bourgeois and Jacob Sullivan in the second round of the singles draw. The players were seeded high enough in the tournament to have a bye in the first round.

On the doubles side, Pearce and teammate Cullimore defeated the duo of Shin and Coutinho from the University of Idaho 8-3 to make it into the Round of 16. They will face the team of McGuiness and Little from the University of Utah, who deafeated BYU's Sullivan and Aidan Carrazedo 6-8 in the second round.

Joining Cullimore and Pearce in the Round of 16 are Bourgeois and Juan Canales, who defeated Air Force Academy's Fumagalli and Olson 8-7. 

Also participating in the tournament for the Cougars were Scott Bohne, Carrazedo and Canales. Bohne lost in the first round of the singles draw to Weber State's Eddie Hou-En-Chen 6-2, 2-6, 1-6 and Carrazedo lost to Weber State's Landon Barlow 6-2, 4-6, 4-6. Canales lost a close match against the University of New Mexico's Sean Baklini 6-4, 6-7, 5-7. 

Monroe and Goryachkicv teamed up to play doubles as well, but lost 6-8 in the first round against Soltyka and Mimnagh-Fleming from the University of Montana.
