TULSA, Okla.- Sophomore Shane Monroe played a strategically sound game Monday morning to upset LSU's Tam Trinh 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the All-American qualifier at Union High School.

"Shane played a terrific match today," BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. "He kept his errors down and his winners up. He moved well and made great decisions on the court, especially by playing forceful shots. I'm excited for him to continue play in the tourament.

Trinh has been ranked as high as 80th by the Incollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) before today's game. Monroe's win puts him one step closer to qualifying for the ITA All-American tournament next week.

Monroe will face the University of Texas's George Goldhoff in the second round on Tuesday afternoon.
