PROVO, Utah—The 2015 Fall Tennis Classic concluded Saturday with nine members of the 2015-2016 BYU men's tennis team participating in preseason play. Sophomore Shane Monroe won the singles draw while fellow Cougars John Pearce and Jacob Sullivan combined to win the doubles draw.

“I thought it was a great preseason opportunity to get a lot of matches in,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. “I think that it was good that it was hot because hopefully it will contribute to our players being more physically prepared for the fall season.”

Monroe, a sophomore, defeated fellow teammate and junior Keaton Cullimore in two sets (6-4, 6-3) to claim the singles title.

“The final singles match today was a high quality, hard fought match,” coach Pearce said. “I’m also pleased with how well our three returned missionaries (Scott Bohne, Keaton Cullimore and John Pearce) are competing. They are playing at a very high level so soon after their missions. I think that our August foreign trip also helped them and the other members of our team to be in better shape than they would have been."

Pearce and Sullivan beat Cullimore and Monroe 6-4 in the open doubles draw while Bohne defeated Brocton Andrus 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 in a tightly contested singles consolation bracket final.

Both the singles and doubles brackets were open to local college and junior players during the three day event hosted by BYU.

The Cougars will continue preseason action Oct. 9-11 at the Utah Invitational held in Salt Lake City at the Eccles Tennis Center. For results of the Fall Tennis Classic, visit http://tennislink.usta.com/tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=163399#&&s=7Draws3
