PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s tennis won every match and dropped only one set against Air Force at home Saturday night on its way to a 7-0 victory.

“The guys really paid the price this week in practice and I think we saw the results today,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. “There was a lot of energy tonight from the guys playing and the guys playing a supporting role.”

On a night where longtime fan and friend of the program, Harold Turley, was honored, the Cougars came out playing inspired tennis. The squad quickly captured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead.

Robin Pfister and Jeremy Bourgeois powered their way to a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over Grant Taylor and Jack McCullers of Air Force. David Ball and Jacob Sullivan clinched the doubles point for BYU by beating Lucas Fumagalli and Dillon Launius 6-3. Since the Cougars had already won the doubles point, Francis Sargeant and Andrey Goryachkov’s match was called at 4-4.

After the Turley jersey retirement ceremony, the Cougars were back on the court for singles play. Sargeant was first off the court after a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win over Fumagalli. Playing at No. 1 singles again, Shane Monroe followed suit with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Taylor. Bourgeois clinched the match for the Cougars with a 6-4, 6-3 straight sets win over Max Olson.

Sullivan and Ball were also victorious in straight sets. Sullivan beat Launius 6-4, 6-3 and Ball outplayed Nicholas Carpenter 7-6, 6-1. Goryachkov battled back from a first-set tiebreak loss to take the second set 6-4 and win a 10-point, third set 10-7.

BYU will be home again next Friday, January 30 for three matches. The Cougars play Montana State at 10 a.m., University of Missouri – Kansas City at 2 p.m. and Nebraska – Omaha at 6 p.m. Live video streaming and live stats are available on the BYU’s schedule page.
