PROVO, Utah – Senior Francis Sargeant will lead the BYU men’s tennis into Los Angeles for the 58th Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships Oct. 29 – Nov. 2. Sargeant is the No. 5 seed in the singles main draw.

Updated Draws

“This tournament, hosted by UCLA, is a great opportunity for our players to see how they measure up to some of the best collegiate players in the country,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said.

Sargeant will play his first match of the tournament Thursday at 3:00 p.m. after a first-round bye. He will team up with freshman teammate Shane Monroe as the No. 4 seed in the doubles main draw. Junior Andrey Goryachkov is slated to compete in the main singles draw. His first-round match will be Thursday at 10:00 a.m. All start times for matches are Pacific Time.

Monroe joins the rest of the Cougars in the singles qualifying draw beginning Wednesday. Monroe, Jacob Sullivan, Robin Pfister, Juan Canales, David Ball and Victor Brown received first-round byes and automatically move into the round of 32 Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Jeremy Bourgeois and Aidan Carrazedo both play in the round of 64 Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.

Four BYU duos will compete in the qualifying draw for doubles beginning Thursday. The combinations of Ball/Sullivan, Goryachkov/Pfister, Brown/Carrazedo and Bourgeois/Canales all received first-round byes and move on to the second round Thursday at 4:15 p.m.

As a freshman at UCLA, Coach Pearce won this tournament and will use that experience to help the Cougars in their quest to replicate his performance.

“I won this tournament my freshman year as a Bruin,” Pearce said. “It would be awesome to get a Cougar player on the same trophy.”
