Two Cougars advance to consolation quarterfinals
LAS VEGAS – Sophomore Aidan Carrazedo and freshman Victor Brown advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket Friday with wins over fellow Cougar David Ball 6-3, 6-3 and Utah’s Louis-Phillipe Gascon 6-3, 6-4 respectively, at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
All Cougars remaining in the main draws fell Friday in Las Vegas. Heading into the day, BYU had two doubles teams still in contention for a main-draw title but both duos fell.
Ball and sophomore Jacob Sullivan fell in their doubles match to the No. 4 seeded duo from New Mexico 8-3 in the round of 16. After Senior Francis Sargeant and junior Andrey Goryachkov won their round of 16 match against a team from Utah 8-3, they lost in the quarterfinals to the No. 3 seeded team 8-5.
“We still have guys winning matches and trying to earn a spot on the travelling squad and lineup,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said.
“The goal is always to win the tournament in either singles or doubles, preferably both,” Pearce said. “So we have some work to do.”
The Cougars head home to prepare for the So Cal Intercollegiate Oct. 29 – Nov. 1.
