Monroe wins singles at Utah Intercollegiate
SALT LAKE CITY – Freshman Shane Monroe won the Flight A singles championship of the Utah Intercollegiate Saturday by beating Utah’s Cedric Willems 6-0, 6-3.
“I was pleased to see Shane go for the win today,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce. “I thought he played a very smart match. I was impressed with his maturity and poise while getting the win.”
Senior Francis Sargeant and freshman David Ball also brought home a championship Saturday by winning the doubles title, beating Willems and Jamey Swiggart of Utah 8-4.
“It was great to see Sargeant and Ball get the win in doubles,” Pearce said.
In the Flight B consolation bracket, sophomore Jeremy Bourgeois took the crown. In his final matchup, he beat Utah’s Johan Jonhagen 6-1, 7-5.
The Cougars head to Las Vages Oct. 15-18 for the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
