PROVO, Utah – Senior captain Francis Sargeant leads BYU men’s tennis into the Utah Intercollegiate Invitational in Salt Lake City on Thursday. The Cougars will begin play in singles matches at 10 a.m.

“This will be a good warm-up for our regional next week in Las Vegas,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. “It will give them an opportunity to get in match shape so they are better prepared physically and mentally for long days and multiple matches in the heat next week in Vegas.”

Sargeant is ranked No. 104 in the country in singles heading into the season and will play his first invitational as the No. 1 seed in Flight A. Freshman Shane Monroe, coming off a finals appearance in the BYU Invitational, is the No. 4 seed in Flight A. Sargeant plays his first match at 10 a.m. while Monroe competes at 12:30 p.m.

Juan Canales will also play in Flight A and takes the court Thursday at 10 a.m. Sophomore Jeremy Bourgeois enters the weekend as the No. 2 seed in Flight B and will begin Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Freshman David Ball will also compete in Flight B and plays his first match at 10a.m.

Canales and Bourgeois will team up in doubles and play their first match Thursday at 9 a.m. Monroe will also participate in doubles competition but will team up with Utah State’s Jaime Barajas at 10 a.m. Sargeant and Ball, who are the No. 1 seeded doubles duo, round out the Cougar doubles teams competing.
