Cougars set to battle 49th-ranked Toreros on the road

PROVO, Utah -- After splitting its matches, BYU men’s tennis hits the road for the second straight week for a matchup with No. 49 San Diego Saturday at noon PDT, at San Diego’s Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.

 

The Cougars (8-13, 2-4 WCC) look to rebound with a chance at an upset against the first-place Toreros (10-7, 5-0 WCC). Both San Diego and Pepperdine sit atop the conference standings.

 

Last weekend BYU clinched a 5-2 come-from-behind win over San Francisco.

 

With the match at 3-2 in favor of BYU, the No. 1 singles player Francis Sargeant came through in the clutch to clinch the win, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, against Bernardo Saraiva.

 

Freshman Matthew Pearce set up Sargeant for the clincher as he picked up his fifth consecutive singles win to secure the point, 6-4, 6-4, against Christian Brockstedt.

 

The next day the Cougars challenged then-No. 67 Santa Clara, but fell 6-1. 

 

BYU will return home to finish out its regular season with matches against Portland April 18 and Gonzaga April 19.
