BYU men’s tennis 2014-15 recruiting class ranked No. 17 in nation

PROVO, Utah--Coming in ahead of powerhouse schools UCLA, Texas and Notre Dame, the BYU men’s tennis recruiting class of 2014-15 was recently ranked No. 17 in the nation by the Tennis Recruiting Network.

 

“It’s incredible,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. “We knew we had a strong recruiting class, and we believe that ranking verifies what we already knew--our recruits are great kids from great families, who just happen to be really good at tennis.”

 

The class also ranks ahead of Texas A&M and Georgia, whose recruits were ranked No. 23 and No. 25, respectively.

 

Headlining BYU’s class are early signees Samuel Tullis, Victor Brown and Shane Monroe.

 

Tullis is a two-time state singles champion and a four-star recruit from Centerville, Utah. He beat two players nationally ranked in the top 25 on his way to reaching the fourth round at the the USTA Under-18 National Hard Court Championships.

 

Brown, hailing from Rancho Cucomonga, Calif., is a five-star recruit and was ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation by the Tennis Recruiting Network. He was singles runner-up at the California Interscholastic Federation Individual State Championships to UCLA freshman and national No. 1 Gage Brymer.  

 

Monroe is the first player from the East Coast committed to play for the Cougars since the late 1980s. The five-star recruit out of New Jersey was ranked as high as No. 10 in the nation by Tennis Recruiting Network, and was the last American standing as he reached the Sweet 16 at the 2011 Under-16 Orange Bowl Junior World Championships. He was also selected to be a practice partner with world No. 2 and winner of six Grand Slam titles, Novak Djokovic, during the 2013 U.S. Open.

 

The Cougars  are 4-2 on the season and carry a 38-match unbeaten streak in ITA Mountain Region play over the past four seasons and this season. 

 

BYU takes that win streak on the road this weekend for two matches. The first is at Air Force Friday at 9:30 a.m. MST, and the second is at No. 57 Denver Saturday at 4 p.m.
