Five advance in Utah Intercollegiates

SALT LAKE CITY--Five BYU players advanced against participants from Utah, Utah State, and Weber State,  at the Utah Intercollegiates on Thursday.
 
The tournament was organized into three draws: red, white and black.
 
In the red draw, BYU's Andrey Goryachkov defeated Utah's Cedric Willems 7-5, 6-3. This is Goryachkov's first competition since taking the singles title at the Utah Fall Tennis Classic in September.
 
Junior Francis Sargeant also advanced by beating Weber State's Oliver Good, 6-4, 6-4, while BYU freshman Jacob Sullivan fell to Utah's Ben Tasevac, 6-2, 6-1.
 
In the white draw, sophomore Nikki Rae enjoyed a bye and freshman Jeremy Bourgeois beat Dylan Harlow of Utah State, 6-1, 6-1.
 
Freshman Juan Canales advanced in the black draw, defeating Utah's Cameron Lee 7-6, 6-3. Fellow freshman Sterling Galli could not overcome a strong run by Weber State's Caio Poitena in the second and third sets, falling 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
 
In doubles group A action, Sargeant and Goryachkov teamed up to beat Utah State's Matt Sweet and Andrew Whiting, 8-5. Galli and Sullivan split their two matches, losing to Slim Hamza and Devin Lane of Utah, 8-4, and defeating Sweet and Whiting, 8-3.
 
In group B, Bourgeois and Matt Pearce beat Rae and Canales, 8-6. They also lost to Weber State's Good and James Smith, 8-4. Pearce is competing unattached.
 
Competition continues through Saturday.
