After a fourth-place finish in its innagural year in the West Coast Conferece, the No. 58 BYU men's tennis team looks to improve from its efforts last year by finishing strong in league play and returning to the NCAA tournament.

  • The Cougars earned a 16-9 (4-3 WCC) record in 2012. BYU fell to Pepperdine in the semi finals of the WCC conference tournament after defeating Gonzaga and San Francisco in the first two rounds.
  • Spencer Smith is the team captain and lone senior on the team. Last year, Smith tallied a 29-9 singles record and set the all-time record for a winning percentage in a season (.763).
  • Four new freshmen join the team this year in John Pearce, Nikki Rae, Andrey Goryachkov and Scott Bohne.
  • Returning starters are juniors Travis Fillmore and Patrick Kawka and sophomores Keaton Cullimore and Francis Sargeant.
  • Daniel Pollock, the former Idaho women's head coach, was recently hired as the new assistant coach.
  • Both Smith (No. 99) and junior Patrick Kawka (No. 97) were nationally ranked in the ITA singles polls last season. With one more year under their belts, the two singles players should be primed for success in 2013.
