PROVO, Utah – After spending a week of training in San Diego over Christmas break, the BYU swimmers and divers are prepared to get back to competition as they face off with Arizona State Friday, January 6.

Before the teams’ annual training stint in California, divers Brandon Watson and Kevin Dressen had the opportunity to compete in the 2012 USA Diving Winter National Championships. Watson placed eighth in the 3-meter with a final score of 1276.05 and 16th with a 332.55 prelim score in the 1-meter.

“I was really happy with the efforts of both Brandon and Kevin,” BYU head diving coach Keith Russell said. “We know that there’s always room for improvement, but all you can do is go out there and try your best. I know that both divers could have scored a little higher, but all in all it was a great experience as far as competition goes.”

The swim and dive team looks to start off the New Year with a victory as they get back into conference competition.

“The ASU women are extremely strong in just about all the events, “ BYU head coach Tim Powers said. “The men are just as strong and they have outstanding divers. Brandon Watson is definitely going to have to be on his game.”

“At the Arena Invite we attended back in November, ASU finished just a few points ahead of us so it will definitely be a good meet and we’re excited to host them.”

The meet start time has been switched from 6 p.m. to 5 p.m. per request of ASU. Because ASU will be competing against the University of Utah on Saturday, they have also requested a shortened program with only 13 events. This will include the mile, short relays, the 200 strokes and the regular freestyle events.

The meet will take place in the Richards Building pool on Friday, January 6 at 5 p.m.
