Cougars Continue To Compete In Day Two Of Toshiba Classic

LONG BEACH -- After day two of the Toshiba Classic Invite, the Cougar swimmers are continuing to battle hard for top spots against tough competition.

BYU started the day off strong with women’s 200 medley relay team placing 12th with a time of 1:45.06 while the men’s team took 9th with their time of 1:32.97. Members of the women’s team included Candice Smith, Sara Jayne Baldwin, Kim Welch and Aleesha Miller. The men’s team consisted of Jake Taylor, Chad Sorenson, Ryan Krause and Geoff Jameson.

In the 400 IM Rachel Grant placed fifth for BYU with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 4:15.57, shaving off a few seconds from her preliminary time of 4:17.28.

In the same event, Stephen Richards of the men’s team placed 13th with his time of 4:04.31.

Freshman Kim Welch placed 11th in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 55.48, while Krause placed 23rd for the men’s team with his time of 50.75.

In the 200 yard freestyle, senior John Kendrick placed 10th with a prelim time of 1:40.20 and a final time of 1:39.71.

For the 100 yard breast stroke, Baldwin of the women’s team placed 21st with a time of 1:04.74. Chad Sorenson of the men’s team placed 19th with his time of 58.17.

Candice Smith took 20th in both the preliminaries and finals of the 100 yard backstroke with a prelim time of 57.00 and a final time of 56.24.

In the same event, Taylor of the men’s team placed fourth in the finals with a time of 49.45.

In the 800 free relay, the women’s team placed 11th with their time of 1:32.72. Team members consisted of Grant, Michelle Menezes, Angela Bennion and Allie Dodds.
