Azevedo Set for NCAA Championships
PROVO -- For the second time in his career at BYU, senior Jorge Azevedo is headed to the NCAA National Championships Meet. Azevedo will compete in the 100-yard butterfly in the meet that will take place March 27-29 in Federal Way, Wash.
In last season's NCAA Championships, Azevedo was a part of a Cougar 200 freestyle relay team that earned 15th place with a time of 2:57.50. This will be the first time that Azevedo will compete at the national meet by swimming in an individual event.
Azevedo recorded his qualifying time for this year's NCAA meet as with a mark of 47.11 in the 100 fly at the annual NCAA qualifying "Last Chance" meet. This time swam by Azevedo is a new BYU school record as well as a new best mark in the Mountain West Conference for the 100 fly.
During the 2007-08 MWC regular season Azevedo recorded the fastest time in the 100 fly with a time of 48.11, which he swam at his last home swim meet of his career against Utah on Jan. 31.
Azevedo is the only BYU men swim team member who has qualified for this year's NCAA Championships.
