PROVO -- The BYU men's swimming and diving team earned a win with the women's team posting a tie in the final training meet for the Cougars before heading into the regular season. The Cougars faced in-state rivals Utah in the annual Beehive Relays hosted in Provo.

The men's team started strong by winning the first four events and maintained the lead to the end. The men ended the meet by winning eight of 12 events on the way to a 152 to 136 victory over the Utes.

"We've been training really hard and I think our guys went out and swam really fast tonight," Men's head coach Tim Powers said. "We had a great crowd tonight, and have Notre Dame next week and we're really looking forward now to the regular season."

The women's team led the Utes heading into the final event, but was beaten to the wall by Utah that resulted in a tie between the two teams. The women had a strong showing in diving by sweeping both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Freshman diver Kristin Pitt posted her first win as a Cougar in the 3-meter event with a final score of 396.67.

"I really think we scored the points that we should have scored," Diving head coach Keith Russell said. "They are probably the best team of divers we will face all year and I think we did a good job of holding our own against them."

The women will now have a week to prepare for a dual meet with San Diego State and New Mexico in Albuquerque on Nov. 4-6. The men will face the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in Provo next Saturday, Oct. 30 at noon.
