Cougars Go Two of Three in Albuquerque

Albuquerque, N.M. (11/7/02) -- In a meet that matched four teams up for dual meet competition, the Cougars won two out of three meets losing only to the University of New Mexico by a score of 131.00 to 112.00.

BYU (2-2, 1-2) defeated both San Diego State University and Northern Arizona University by scores of 128.00-113.00 and 139.00-104.00 respectively.

Team captain senior Amanda Grant led the way for the Cougars winning both individual events she competed in and was a member of the winning relay team. Grants wins came in the 200 IM, the 200 breaststroke, and the 200 medley relay.

Freshmen Shannon Bloom and Natasha Schlup also came up big for the Cougars with wins in the 200 free and 200 back respectively.

The Cougars' Mountain West Conference diver of the week, senior Kelli Einfeldt, had a strong performance against the three teams. Einfeldt placed second in the one-meter board and third in the three-meter board.

The Cougars loss to the Lobos marked the second time in as many weeks that BYU has lost to a team that has never defeated the Cougars in dual meet competition (last week the Cougars lost to Utah 135-112).

BYU will take to the water in Albuquerque for the Lobo Invitational at the University of New Mexico. The invitational begins Friday, Nov. 8 and continues through Saturday, Nov. 9.
