BYU Completes Weekend Sweep With Wins Over Wyoming

LARAMIE -- Less than 24 hours after beating Air Force, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Wyoming Saturday afternoon. The men won by a 136-107 margin, while the women posted a 145-97 victory.

Junior All-American Arunas Savickas captured the 100 and 200 free event, and Stephen Wells, Gary Tan and Jay Buys also picked up individual wins. Senior diver Devan Porter contributed big points with his win on the 3-meter board and runner-up spot on the 1-meter as well.

"This was a good meet," men's coach Tim Powers said. "We won all the events we needed to. Our guys got up and answered the bell, and did really well. I'm very proud of our guys."

The women also had a successful outing, led by senior Valynn Wooley, who claimed two events. Just one night after winning her first collegiate meet, sophomore Amy Lueken won her second in the 200 free, while juniors Jennifer Tasker and Jennifer Teerlink posted wins as well. On the other end of the pool, Mountain West Conference female diver of the week Rachelle Smith Kunkel swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.

"We swam a lot better (against Wyoming) than against Air Force," women's head coach Stan Crump said. "Anytime we can get out of Laramie alive, we're happy."

With the wins, the men improved to 4-3, while the women upped their record to 3-1. The women's team will play host to Colorado State and New Mexico next weekend in Provo.
