BYU Swimmer, Divers Earn Weekly Conference Honors

PROVO -- Following sweeps of Air Force and Wyoming by the BYU men's and women's swimming teams last weekend, Cougar swimmer Amy Lueken and divers Rachelle Smith Kunkel and Devan Porter were honored as the Mountain West Conference swimmer and divers of the week Wednesday.

Lueken, a sophomore from Tucson, Ariz., was named the female swimmer of the week for the first time in her career. Lueken won her first collegiate meet ever against Air Force Friday night, and then came back the next day to win her second meet against Wyoming. Both wins came in the 200 free.

Kunkel, a senior All-American from West Valley City, won female diver of the week honors for the second consecutive week and fourth time this season. Kunkel finished first on the 1-meter and second on the 3-meter board against Air Force before sweeping both events the next day in Laramie.

Finally, Porter, a native of Mesa, Ariz., garnered male diver of the week honors. Porter, a senior who has been plagued with injury much of the season, won the 3-meter event in both meets. Against Wyoming, he defeated top diver Oscar Delgado, who currently holds the conference's season high score in the event.

Lueken and Kunkel will led the Cougar women this weekend in home meets against conference rivals Colorado State and New Mexico. The BYU men's teams are off until next week.
