BYU Swimmers Fare Well On Opening Day Of Shootout

IRVINE -- BYU men's and women's swimming teams fared well in the first day of competition at the Big West Shootout. The men defeated Washington (48-47), Air Force (58-37) and Cal-State Northridge (86-8), while the women defeated Air Force (65-30) and Cal-State Northridge (73-22), but fell to Washington (40-55).

Arunas Savickas and Gary Tan led the BYU men's squad. Savickas won the 200 free with a time of 1:38.78 while Tan won both the 200 IM and the 200 back. The 400 free relay team also swam to a first-place finish. Mike Mullen finished second in the 50 free, just a half second behind the winner. Nick Tobler was edged out in the 200 breast, finishing second, while teammate Terrence Lim finished second in the 500 free.

Heidi Lietz and Tamber Covington once again led the BYU women's team. Leitz won both the 50 and 100 free while Covington won the 200 breast and finished second in the 200 IM. Monica Ferrell and Amy McClellan each finished second in the 200 free and the 200 back, respectively. Amanda Grant finished second in the 100 free behind Lietz. The Cougars also swept the top two spots in the 400 free relay.

The Big West Shootout continues through tomorrow.
