Cougars Win Close One Over Rams, 129-114
The BYU women's swimming and diving team won a close call against conference rival Colorado State 129-114, Friday. The victory improves the Cougars to 4-3 in dual meet action this season.
MWC Swimmer-of-the-Week Cortnee Adams led the way with a win in the 200 free, posting a time of 1:52.37. Adams, an All-American transfer from Auburn, also won the 100 free with a time of 51.16.
Junior Heidi Leitz won the 50 free, posting a time of 24.24 Captain Ashlee Rumfallow won the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.68. She was followed in second by teammate Amanda Grant.
In the most exciting event of the evening, sophomore Codi Jensen won a tough battle in the 500 free that went down to the wire. Jensen led much of the event but the Rams Becky Crissinger snuck up on her in the final lap.
"I didn't do very well in the 1000 free," said Jensen. "I saw her ahead of me on the final lap and so I started kicking. I made a decision to win."
Jensen won the event by one-tenth of a second, posting a time of 5:16.08.
"Jensen's performance in the 500 free was the key to our victory tonight in such a well-battled conference meet.," said head coach Stan Crump. "We have a on-going rivalry with Colorado State and we look forward to conference championships, but we can't over look New Mexico tomorrow."
The 200-medley relay team of Rumfallow, Grant, Lyndi Juvan and Nichole Burrows swam victorious with a time of 1:47.92.
For the divers, six-time MWC Diver of the Week Kelli Einfeldt won the 3-meter events. Junior Tina Morrow dove well, posting second place finish in the 1-meter event.
BYU looks forward to another conference meet tomorrow against New Mexico at noon in the Richards Building pool.
