Cougar swimmers shine at World Swimming Championships
MELBOURNE, Australia — BYU senior swimmers Javier Nicolas Matta and Josue Dominguez both delivered spectacular performances for their respective countries in this year's World Swimming Championships.
Representing Peru's national team, Nicolas placed 24th out of 65 swimmers in the world 100m butterfly event, setting a new Peruvian record with a 51.77. He also participated in the 100m IM, swimming a 53.75. Nicolas swam in two relay events for his team as well, the 4x50m freestyle and 4x50 mixed medley relay. In the freestyle relay, his team posted a 1:35.41, while in the medley relay, they swam a 1:45.80.
Dominguez represented the Dominican Republic national team throughout the week, participating in two events. In the 50m breaststroke, he would place 32nd in the field, while in the 4x50m mixed medley relay, he and his team went on to set a new Dominican Republic record, swimming a 1:37.25.
Both Nicolas and Dominguez will rejoin the Cougars this week as they get set to take on the University of Denver on Jan. 6, looking to build on their individual and team successes this season.
