BYU swimmers represent their countries at 2021 Junior Pan American Games

CALI, Columbia — Two BYU swimmers traveled to Columbia this week to compete in the 2021 Junior Pan American Games, with Diego Camacho breaking a Mexican national record.

Freshman Camacho represented Mexico at the Games. His relay teams took silver in the men's 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:24.02, gold in the men's 400-meter medley relay with a time of 3:42.67 and silver in the mixed 400-meter medley relay with a time 3:56.33. He also competed in the finals of the men's 800-meter freestyle relay, taking fifth place with a time of 7:41.25.

Camacho earned silver in the individual 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:02.29. He then went on to win the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 55.38, setting a new national record and securing the gold for Mexico.

Senior Javier Nicolas Matta represented Peru. His relay teams took fourth in the men's 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 3:25.45 and fourth in the 800-meter freestyle relay with a time of 7:32.74. He competed in the finals of the mixed 400-meter freestyle relay, taking seventh with a time of 3:43.38.

Matta took fourth place in the individual 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter IM with times of 53.82 and 2:05.00, respectively. He then took sixth in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 51.15.
