Cougars Represent at Utah Dive Invite
SALT LAKE CITY – Several divers represented BYU in the finals at the Utah Invitational this weekend as they competed against Air Force, USC and Utah.
"The men and women both had their challenges on the first day but were able to rise up to the level of competition into their game plan," BYU head diving coach Tyce Rouston said. "Each day the divers showed improvement and the men stepped up in finals taking first and second over some tough competition. I'm pleased that the women got two finalists to compete against some really strong and consistent USC divers. We are looking forward to our winter training trip to focus on fine-tuning and platform, which has become a strong event for BYU."
On the first day of the diving invitational, Morgan Mellow and Summer Westover worked their ways to finals in the women’s 1-meter event. Mellow finished sixth in finals, scoring a 255.25, while Westover came in ninth with a 241.45.
For then men, Gonzales landed himself in the 3-meter finals, coming in fifth with a score of 310.40. Kimble Mahler and Ryan Evans also represented in the 3-meter finals, putting up scores of 260.20 and 252.50, respectively.
During the second day of the competition, Eric Muir placed first in the men’s 1-meter finals with a score of 318.75. Nathan Gonzales followed after, taking second place with a score of 314.20. Mahler and Evans also showed their skills in finals placing fifth and seventh, respectively.
In the women's 3-meter event, Morgan Paul placed sixth in finals with a score of 280.85. Morgan Mellow-Dopp also made an appearance in finals, placing eighth and scoring a 252.65
This concludes the fall season for the BYU swim and dive teams. The Cougars will compete next in a dual meet in Phoenix, Arizona, against Grand Canyon. The meet will be held at the Edward A. Reese Aquatic Center on Jan. 11. The Cougars will have their winter training camp in Tampa, Florida.
