BYU Takes Victory Over UNLV

PROVO, Utah – With three divers receiving zone cuts and several swimmers setting pool records, BYU earned the victory over UNLV Saturday afternoon. 

“It was a great battle against great opponents," BYU head coach John Brooks said. "The women's team dug deep and came out with some really good wins. The men's team came down and pulled off a great win as well. We had great team effort. I'm really proud of everyone and looking forward to the big weekend for our women coming up."

The men defeated the Rebels, 153-144, while the Cougar women landed on top, 167-133. 

Three divers earned zone cuts in their individual events. Eric Muir and Nathan Gonzales both received cuts in the men’s 1-meter event with scores of 344.10 and 304.25, respectively. Kennedy Cribbs represented the women, taking a zone cut in the women’s 1-meter event with a score of 273.30

Both the men and women brought a strong start in their respective 200-yard medley relays, finishing first in both events. A team of Brynn Sproul, Lily Plaudis, Katie Smith and Gwen Gustafson earned a winning time of 1:42.47, securing a new pool record for the facility. For the men, Brayden Murphy, Josue Dominguez, Javier Matta and Connor Stirling swam a quick 1:30.26.

On the women’s side, Sproul took the first individual win in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.69. Teammate Lily Plaudis also placed first in her individual 100-yard breaststroke event with a finishing time of 1:02.83. Gustafson added her own first-place finished to the board, helping out her team. She dominated in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, securing winning times of 23.42 and 51.65, respectively. 

Two women came back with other solid wins, securing new pool-records. Sproul secured a time of 2:01.03 in the 200-yard backstroke and Plaudis earned an impressive time of 2:19.64 in the 200-yard breaststroke.

The men made a strong appearance in the pool, recording several wins as well. Stirling took over the board in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, finishing first with times of 20.73 and 45.49, respectively. Following in the 50-yard freestyle, Jared Shaw placed second at 20.79 and Roger Woods came after in third at 20.85. 

Dominguez racked up the wins in the breaststroke events, placing a new pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke at 55.51 and also touching in first at 2:05.31 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Teammate Matta added another win for the men in the 200-yard butterfly, touching at 1:51.28. 

Continuing their streak at home, the Cougar women will remain in Provo to host the BYU Invitational on Nov. 8-9 at the Richards Building Pool.
