Sorenson places 15th in 50 freestyle at National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS (July 1, 2017) — Payton Sorenson of BYU placed 15th in the 50 meter freestyle finals at the Phillips 66 National Championship/World Championship Team Trials on Saturday evening.

“I’m so happy for Payton to have had the chance to race at night with some of the top swimmers in the world,” BYU coach John Brooks said. “Representing BYU at this meet is pretty awesome, too.”

The BYU senior-to-be from Mesa, Arizona, clocked 22.56 in the finals and qualified as one of 24 swimmers for the finals with a time of 22.51 in Saturday morning’s preliminaries, the 12th-best out of the 60 swimmers competing in the event.

NCAA three-peat record-holder Caeleb Dressel (Florida) won Saturday evening’s finals in 21.53, followed by American record-holder Nathan Adrian (bronze medalist in Brazil).

2016 Rio Olympians Tony Ervin (gold medal) and 2017 NCAA runner up Ryan Held (NC State) also completed in Saturday’s finals. The top four from the 50 free on Saturday made the World Championship Team and the top six are part of the national team.
