PROVO, Utah – Payton Sorenson received Swimmer of the Week by College Swimming magazine last Tuesday and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation/TURBO Male Athlete of the Week last Wednesday.

"Payton is well deserving of these two awards," said head BYU swim coach John Brooks. "He is one of the best of the competitors in the country and I am so proud of his accomplishments."

Sorenson broke BYU’s 50 freestyle school record (19.23) on December 1 while competing at the Texas Invitational. He registered a time of 19.22 in the prelims and was ranked the top seed in the event going into the finals.  Sorenson matched his preliminary time and claimed a No. 4 national ranking and a top MPSF conference time.

In addition, Sorenson, a junior from Mesa, Arizona, took fourth place in the 100 free with a registered time of 43.06, which is a top-10 national ranking. He also assisted the men’s 200 medley relay team in a sixth-place finish (1:28.18) and a seventh-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (2:55.61).

The BYU men’s swim and dive team is currently ranked 26th in the NCAA’s midseason rankings.

This is Sorenson’s first MPSF/ TURBO award this year and third in his career. It is also Sorenson’s second Swimmer of the Week award this season.
