OMAHA, Nebraska (July 1, 2016)-All-American Payton Sorenson of BYU swim and dive just missed advancing Friday to the finals in the 50 freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

The sophomore from Arizona won his heat in the morning preliminaries with a time of 22.29 which placed him 10th in qualifying for the evening semifinals where he clocked a 22.37 for 13th place. The top eight eight swimmers advance to Friday's finals.

“For Payton to make it back in the 50 free, the fastest even there is at this level, is remarkable,” BYU coach John Brooks said. “I’m so proud of him to make the top 16 at Trials and to have the ‘Y’ represented. I’m sure this will motivate Payton for the next few years.”

Freshman teammate Connor Stirling placed 139th with a time of 23.65 in the morning preliminaries and did not advance to the semifinals.
