NCAA Championship Results-Day 1

ATLANTA – Jake Taylor and Payton Sorenson were named Second-Team All-Americans at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

“The goal was to make it back and score points and both Jake and Payton did,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “We are excited and happy to be here. To have the experience with these guys is a huge thing. Kevin Dreesen got in the groove after his first couple of dives and hopefully he can continue his success next season. It was he and Payton's first trip to NCAA's so it is a great experience for them. It was a very exciting first day, and we expect Jake to come back and score again tomorrow.”

Taylor earned the Second-Team All-American citation in the 200 individual medley, while Sorenson gained the honor in the 50 freestyle.

In the 200 IM preliminaries, Taylor clocked a 1:43.29 for twelfth place. He cut time and finished in ninth place in the event finals with a 1:42.89. Sorenson sprinted a 19.40 in the prelims of the 50 free for 13th place and finished the finals in 19.48 for a 14th place finish.

In the 1-meter dive, Dreesen scored a 305.35, putting him at 32nd overall. His score was not enough to qualify for the evening’s final round.

Taylor will look to repeat his success Friday, competing in the 100 back. Sorenson will compete again on Saturday in the 100 free. For more information, visit the championship info page. Preliminaries will be streamed online through a live webcast and finals can be streamed on ESPN3.com. Fans can also follow the action on the live results page or the Meet Mobile app. Full results will be posted following each day’s events on the men’s schedule page.
