Thirteen Harriers Honored as MWC Scholar-Athletes

PROVO -- Thirteen athletes from the BYU men’s and women’s cross country teams were recognized as 2009-10 Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete honorees.

The women led with eight honorees, while the men’s team had five. BYU had 108 MWC Scholar-Athletes, trailing only New Mexico with 116.

Senior Sarah Frey, majoring in dietetics, earned her fourth honor, while seniors Jonathan Kotter, a law student, and Ryan Merriman, a political science major, each earned a third honor.

A total of 548 student-athletes were honored through out the conference, including 42 individuals who have achieved a 4.00 or higher cumulative grade point average over two or more terms, and 60 student-athletes who were recognized in multiple sports.

The MWC Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
