Shay, Wagner Sweep MWC Honors
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- BYU junior Stephan Shay and freshman Angela Wagner have been selected as the Mountain West Conference men's and women's cross country athletes of the week, sweeping the weekly honors for the Cougars.
Shay, hailing from East Jordan, Mich., led the way for the BYU men with a four-mile time of 19:29:03 at the BYU Autumn Classic held at East Bay Golf Course in Provo, Utah, on Sept. 8. His time brought him in at second behind Minnesota All-American Chris Rombough. A transfer from Michigan State, this race marked Shay's first outing as a BYU Cougar and his first actual race at altitude, according to BYU head coach Ed Eyestone. The Cougars finished second behind Minnesota with 26 points.
Wagner, a freshman from Pretoria, South Africa, finished third in the BYU Autumn Classic, breaking the BYU freshman school record for the course with a 5K time of 17:51:09. Despite battling an on-going injury, Wagner became the first BYU freshman to break the 18-minute mark. The BYU women's team finished second behind Baylor University with 39 points.
