No. 6 BYU chosen to win WCC Championship
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – WCC coaches picked BYU men's cross country to win its third consecutive West Coast Conference championship and fifth since 2011. The Cougars, ranked No. 6 in this year's USTFCCCA Preseason Poll, finished seventh nationally and third in the Mountain Region last year.
BYU tallied 64 points including eight first place votes, while No. 14 Portland captured 57 points and one first place vote. Gonzaga earned 47 points for third place, narrowly beating out San Francisco (45 points). They were followed by Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, Pepperdine and San Diego in that order.
BYU led the way with six runners placed on the All-WCC Preseason Team. These runners included seniors Spencer Hanson and Jonathan Harper, juniors Daniel Carney, Rory Linkletter and Clayton Young, and sophomore Brayden McLelland.
The 2017 WCC Championship race will be held Friday, October 27, at the Metropolitan Links Golf Course in Oakland, California.
The Cougars open their season with the BYU Autumn Classic Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, September 16, at the East Bay Golf Course in Provo. The schedule for the race can be found here.
