Four BYU teams in the top 25

BYU’s football and women’s soccer teams entered the top 25 of their respective polls to join women’s volleyball and men’s cross country and give the Cougars four ranked teams.

Stanford and Florida State are the only programs in the nation to currently have their men’s cross country, football, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams all ranked in the top 25. The Cougar teams are ranked as follows: men’s cross country (No. 3), women’s volleyball (No. 15), women’s soccer (No. 17) and football (No. 25).

Women’s cross country is also knocking on the door as it is receiving votes and sits seven spots outside the top 25. Following are recaps of what BYU’s ranked teams have done so far and what they have coming up this week.

Men’s cross country

In the first USTFCCCA regular season poll of the 2012 season, BYU ranked third, maintaining its preseason poll position. The Cougars also rank first in the Mountain Region and West Coast Conference coaches' polls.

After winning its first race of the season at the Utah State Invitational at the beginning of the month, BYU looks to add another top finish this weekend at the BYU Autumn Classic. The meet will be held at Cascade Golf Center in Orem at 5 p.m. MT on Friday.

Football

Coming off a 45-13 victory over Weber State Saturday, BYU (2-0) received a No. 25 national ranking in The Associated Press Top 25 poll released Sunday. 

BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall's teams have now received a spot in one of the two major national polls during each season since 2006 and are one of 11 programs that have earned a final national ranking in five of the past six seasons. The Cougars, who opened the year with a 30-6 win over Washington State, are listed 30th overall among others receiving votes in this week's USA Today Coaches' Poll. 

Up next for BYU is in-state rival Utah. The Cougars will face the Utes on Saturday in Salt Lake City in an 8 p.m. MT kick on ESPN2. 

Women’s soccer

After an upset win over No. 6 Penn State and a five-goal victory over Texas, the BYU women's soccer team received a No. 17 ranking in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Top 25 poll. Last week the Cougars were receiving votes in the same poll. BYU was last ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 the week of Nov. 1, 2010.

The Cougars are now 6-1-0 on the year and host Cal Poly on Thursday and No. 23 Washington on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. MT and Thursday’s game will be broadcast live on BYUtv and BYUtv.org.

Women’s volleyball

After winning the BYU Nike Invitational last weekend, the Cougar women's volleyball team moved up to No. 15 in the AVCA Coaches Poll Monday, its highest ranking since 2007.

BYU defeated in-state rival Utah 3-0 before sweeping Bowling Green and Portland State to win the invitational. The wins improved the Cougars' record to 9-0, their best start since 2005. Only two other teams in the top 25 have 9-0 records (USC and Kansas State) and only one team has more wins (Michigan with a 10-1 record).

The last time BYU reached the top 15 was in 2007, when the Cougars finished the year ranked No. 12 after advancing to the Regional Finals of the NCAA Tournament.

The Cougars are back in action this weekend in Washington, D.C., at the George Washington Invitational.
