Cougars Fare Well in Fall Standings
PROVO -- BYU has placed 23rd in the final fall Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings released today by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). BYU is the top Mountain West Conference school and the second-best institution from a non-automatic BCS qualifying conference behind only Princeton.
"We've had a good start to the 2009-10 season," said BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe. "Our football, soccer and cross country teams performed very well, and we're looking forward to continued success with our teams that are competing right now."
The Cougars scored points in four sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, women’s soccer and football. The cross country teams finished 17th and 19th, respectively, at the NCAA Championships while the soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the year ranked No. 14. The football team received its highest final national ranking since 1996, coming in at No. 12 after an 11-2 season.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today and is the only all-sports competition that rates the country's best overall collegiate athletics programs. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women’s and 10 men’s. The first Winter Division I standings will be released Thursday, March 11, 2010.
