BYU Basketball's Midnight Madness Set for Friday in the Smith Fieldhouse

PROVO -- BYU will unveil its 1999-2000 men's and women's basketball teams Friday night at the fourth annual Midnight Madness being held in the Smith Fieldhouse. A capacity crowd of 5,000 Cougar fans are expected to take part in the event.

"This will be one of the best events on campus all year," said BYU Marketing Director Mike Deaver. "Thanks to title sponsor Pointclick.com, more than $20,000 is guaranteed to be given away in addition to the many other prizes and contests that have annually been a part of Midnight Madness. It's a fun way for the fans to get to meet the teams, have some fun and get excited for the season. Last year we turned away several thousand fans, so it's important for people to get there early to get a seat."

The men's and women's teams will each scrimmage and participate in a three-point challenge, pitting the men against the women. The men's team will also put on a slam dunk contest and both head coaches, Steve Cleveland (men) and Trent Shippen (women), will address the crowd.

Fans in attendance will have their chance to take the court in a variety of contests. Free throw, three-point and slam dunk contests test the spectators' basketball abilities while dash for cash, musical chairs and other festivities also give fans a chance to participate and take home some of the many prizes and giveaways. There will be three $10,000 three-point shootouts. Airline tickets, BYU-Utah football tickets, cell phone and service, club memberships, basketball shoes, food, and a new car are among the available giveaways.

Sponsors for Midnight Madness include title sponsor Pointclick.com, Alero Oldsmobile, Southwest Airlines, Airtouch, Universal Campus Credit Union, TGI Friday's, Hogi Yogi, Teriyaki Stix, Gold's Gym and Nike.

The festivities actually begin at 6 p.m. with the EA Sports NCAA 2000 Playstation tournament. At 8:30 p.m. the ALERO car giveaway takes place in front of the Smith Fieldhouse. The doors open at 10:45 p.m. for Midnight Madness with the welcome and entertainment from Cosmo, the Cougarettes and cheerleaders ushering in the introduction of the teams beginning at 11:30 p.m. The event is expected to finish just after 1 a.m.
