BYU leads WCC Commissioner's Cup Standings after Fall Seasons

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – At the conclusion of the 2018 West Coast Conference fall sports seasons, six-time defending champion Brigham Young University owns a large lead in the race for the 2018-19 West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup – awarded annually to the WCC institution garnering the most success during Conference play.

After winning outright championships in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s soccer and volleyball the Cougars tallied 40.0 Cup points. The Cougars won titles in all four of their WCC-sponsored sports. University of Portland is second after the conclusion of fall play with 31.5 points after posting runner-up showings in men’s and women’s cross country.

Portland owns the top spot in the men's all-sports trophy race with 15.0 points, good for a one half-point lead over University of San Francisco (14.5).

BYU dominates the women's all-sports trophy race with a maximum tally of 30.0 points (out of 30 possible), after sweeping cross country, soccer and volleyball hardware. Pepperdine University is second in the women's race for the trophy with 18.0 points after a runner-up finish in volleyball and a third place finish in women’s soccer.

Overall, the Cougars compiled 40.0 Commissioner's Cup points after the fall season, which includes menʼs and womenʼs cross country, menʼs and womenʼs soccer and women's volleyball. Portland (31.5) is second, San Francisco (30.5) is third, Saint Mary’s College is fourth (29.0) and San Diego (27.0) is fifth. Loyola Marymount University (25.0) is sixth followed by Gonzaga University (24.5) in seventh place. Santa Clara University (24.0), Pepperdine (22.0) and University of the Pacific (17.5) round out the standings.

The next update in the race for the Commissioner's Cup will come after the menʼs and womenʼs basketball seasons conclude at the 2019 West Coast Conference Basketball Championships, held March 7-12 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

BYU captured its unprecedented sixth-consecutive Commissioner’s Cup victory last season and won the women’s all-sport trophy for the sixth time. The Dons claimed the men’s all-sport trophy for the first time since 2010-11 and fourth overall. The Cougars rank No. 4 in the 2018-19 Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Division I Fall Standings, released Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018. Portland checks in at No. 6 overall.
