AUSTIN -- The BYU women's diving team returned from a good showing against some of the nations best divers as they participated in the Texas Invitational over the weekend. The Cougars had two top-ten finishes in the 1-meter competition.

"The women represented us in a really good fashion," BYU diving coach Keith Russell said. "We didn't do as well on the 3-meter board as we could have but overall we did a good job."

In a meet that featured the two of the top four teams in the nation, BYU sophomore Ava Jackman and sophomore Tawni Jones reached the finals in the 1-meter competition as they finished fifth and seventh, respectively. Jackman scored 256.65 points for her dive in the 1-meter, while Jones was awarded 252.55 points for her dive in the same event.

The 3-meter board was the other event that the Cougar women competed in at the invitational. BYU had three divers finish in the top fifteen from the 3-meter board. Senior Angela Nelson placed the highest among the Cougars as she came in tenth (264.10), and following not much behind her, Jones came in thirteenth and Jackman in fifteenth.

The BYU men's and women's swim and dive teams are finished with their fall semester competitions and will next be in action on Jan. 10, 2008 against TCU here in Provo.

AUSTIN -- The BYU women's diving team jumps back in the water this weekend to compete in the Texas Invitational hosted by the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. The festivities begin on Thursday and conclude Saturday.

Some of the best teams in the country will be in action this weekend with the Cougars. The women's teams from No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 Arizona, No. 12 SMU, No. 16 Texas, No. 17 Arizona State, No. 19 Wisconsin, Nebraska, TCU and UNLV will be in action at the same time.

"We know what we have to do to compete at this big meet, we just need to make sure we execute on those things," BYU coach Keith Russell said. "We should have some good competition. It should be very similar to the level of competition that is at the NCAA qualifying. I expect things to go well."

The Texas Invitational will include all three diving events. The first event Thursday will be the 1-meter for the men and the 3-meter for the women. Friday will see the men jump from the 3-meter and the women from the 1-meter, and Saturday both men and women will dive from the platform.

Both Thursday and Friday will have a preliminary round of diving that will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the finals beginning at 5:15 p.m. each of those days. Saturday's platform diving will only have one session beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The Cougars will be led this weekend by Angela Nelson and Tawni Jones for the women, who each have top scores for their team. Nelson's 1-meter (272.40) and 3-meter (295.90) dives are the best by a BYU women's diver, while Tawni Jones' platform score of 200.18 is a team season best.
