Cougar Women Swim Past Rams

Image

Fort Collins, Colo. (Jan. 19, 2007) -- The BYU women's swim team picked up right where they left off two months ago as they defeated Colorado State 195-105 in its first dual meet since before Thanksgiving. The times may not have been the best for the Cougars, but they took first in 15 of the overall 16 events.

"The meet went well for us," said BYU women's head swim coach Stan Crump. "I was a little worried since we haven't competed in so long, but the girls did well."

BYU got big swims out of Angela Goodson and Leilani Roberts as they both swam well in their individual and relay events. Goodson took first in the 100 butterfly (56.73) and 200 IM (2:08.08) and helped the 200-medley relay (1:45.68) to a first-place finish. Roberts won the 100 (51.35) and 200 free (1:53.19) and was with Goodson on the winning 200-medley relay. Roberts was also a part of the winning 400 free relay (3:30.39).

"Angela and Leilani did really well for us," said Coach Crump. "They may not have had their best times, but for the circumstances we were under they did really well."

Freshman Natasha Menezes came up big for the Cougars as she finished first in the 500 (5:02.38) and 1000 free (10:28.24) and led off the 400 free relay, totaling 1600 yards of swimming on the day.

"Those were some big distances for any swimmer," said Coach Crump. "You usually don't find a swimmer doing that well in all her events with distances like that."

Other Cougars that took first were Brittany Davis-Burk in the 100 (57.91) and 200 backstroke (2:05.88), Jamie Bloom in the 100 (1:05.77) and 200 breaststroke (2:21.92) and Kirsty Ferrell in the 50 free (24.27). Bloom and Davis-Burk swam with Goodson and Roberts in the 200-medley relay while Menezes, Davis-Burk, Ferrell and Roberts made up the 400 free relay.

Once again BYU swept the boards as Angela Nelson claimed the 3-meter (277.57) and Tawni Jones took the 1-meter (267.37).

"Angela did really well her dives tonight," said Coach Crump. "Angela and Tawni got some high scores and one of these meets one of them will sweep the boards."

With the win the Cougars (3-0) remain undefeated on the season and find themselves in a first-place tie with Utah (4-0) and Wyoming (3-0) for the MWC lead. The next meet for BYU will be Friday Jan. 26 as they travel back to Provo to face Air Force followed by Wyoming on Saturday.

BYU Women's Swim Team Returns To Action Friday

Image

PROVO -- The BYU women's swim team will start the second half of its season Friday as they travel to Fort Collins to take on Colorado State. The meet between the Rams (4-0) and Cougars (2-0) is one of the most anticipated meets of the season.

"Colorado State is really good," said BYU women's head coach Stan Crump. "We match up well against them and it should be a good meet."

Last year when the Rams came to Provo the Cougars were led by U-Nice Chan and Angela Goodson as they each placed first in three different events helping BYU win 162-128. This year's meet will feature a Colorado State squad that matches up well against a BYU squad that hasn't competed since Thanksgiving.

"We should be ready and do well tomorrow," said Coach Crump. "We look good on paper and are well prepared."

The meet will begin at 6 p.m. MST in Fort Collins, Colo.
