ST. GEORGE, Utah / MISSION VIEJO, Calif. — The BYU swim and dive teams got the events started Wednesday in Mission Viejo, California and St. George, Utah, with the divers competing in a team event, and the men's 200 medley relay team setting a new school record. 

Dive

The diver's started the week strong at the Marguerite Aquatics Center, with their first event being a team format. The men placed first with a score of 326.90 and the women placed second with a score of 243.65. 

The men's team was rounded out by Mickey Strauss, Chase Hindmarsh and Carter Davis, while the women's team had Sophia DeBergh, Alexia Jackson and Brynn Larson as the main participants. The next three days of events will be filled with 1-meter, 3-meter and platform dives as the Cougars chase this years championship. 

Swim

On the swim side, the majority of today's events at the Human Performance Center were exhibition races in preparation for the coming days, outside of the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay for the men and women. 

The highlight of the day came from the men's swim team, as a relay team of Diego Camacho, Josue Dominguez, Brad Prolo and Javier Nicolas Matta contributed to a new program record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:26.12 to place second in the event. The women had solid performances as well in the event as Charlotte Fie'eiki, Mackenzie Miller, Emma Marusakova and Jullia Bartell placed sixth with a 1:40.81.

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, Brigham Harrison, Luigi Riva, Abe Barragan and Camacho came in with a fourth place finish, swimming a 6:30.06 for the men. On the women's side, Halli Williams, Victoria Schreiber, Megan Bergstrom and Regan Geldmacher competed in the event, swimming a fourth place 7:20.47.

A full slate of events is set to kick-off tomorrow, as the swimmers begin competing at 10 a.m. MDT while the divers will begin at 10 a.m. PDT. A live stream of the meets can be purchased on a pay-per-view option found at mpsports.org. Event results can also be followed on the BYU Swim and Dive social media pages on Instagram and Twitter. 

ST. GEORGE, Utah / MISSION VIEJO, Calif. — In what will be the conference finale of the swim and dive season, the Cougar swimmers will travel to St. George, Utah while the divers will travel to Mission Viejo, California to compete in the MPSF Championships. 

The meets will be held at the Human Performance Center in St. George, and the Marguerite Aquatics Center in Mission Viejo. Start times for the events can be found on the schedule tab or the file included below. The swimmers and divers will be competing at different times Feb. 15-18. Final results of the meets will be posted at each day's conclusion on byucougars.com.

After placing first in last year's MPSF conference championships, the BYU men's teams will look to defend their title, while the women will look to improve upon their third place finish at the end of the 2021-2022 season. 

Last Time Out

In the most recent swim meet against the University of Utah, the BYU men's and women's team suffered losses in the head-to-head contest. This marked the men's first loss of the season in dual meets, and the women's third.

The Cougar men's swimmers dominated the breaststroke events, with Evan VanderSluis coming in first with a 56.11 in the 100-yard breast and Max Cannon placing second in the 200-yard breast with a 2:04.81. 

For the women, the 500-yard freestyle event was the highlight of the meet, as Regan Geldmacher (5:04.50), Megan Bergstrom (5:05.34) and Victoria Schreiber (5:06.16) went 1-2-3 for the Cougars. 

The dive team most recently competed in the Air Force Diving Invite in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Mickey Strauss of the men's team set a new personal-best score of 411.05 in the 3-meter dive event to bring home the win. 

The highlight for the women's team came on day three of the invite, where all three Cougars who competed in the platform event qualified for the finals. Alexia Jackson (216.75, 4th place), Sophia DeBergh (212.30, 6th place) and Brooklyn Larson (203.30, 10th place) all finished the prelim round in the top 10 out of 30 participants. DeBergh's 212.30 was also a season and personal best score.

Meet Information

Day 1 of the swim meet will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, while the dive meet will be having open practices throughout the day. More meet information will be posted throughout the week at each days conclusion.
