PROVO, Utah – BYU swim and dive came away with two record-breaking times and several other all-time bests on the first day of the Mizzou Invitational.

“Today was a great day,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “Two school records were broken and we had a lot of best times. We are all pumped for tomorrow’s racing.”

Gwen Gustafson broke her own school record in the women’s 50-yard freestyle, setting the new No. 1 time at 22.43. A team of Jake Walters, Josue Dominguez, Javier Matta and Connor Stirling took over the No. 1 spot in school history in the men’s 400-medley relay with a time of 3:11.41.

Several other Cougars had impressive races and earned all-time best finishes. During prelims, Matta swam an impressive 100-yard butterfly and replaced his No. 3 spot with the No. 2 all-time best at 47.21. In finals, Stirling worked his way to a No. 3 all-time best in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.60. Not slowing down, Stirling stole another No. 3 rank in the men’s 50-yard freestyle, finishing at 19.66.

Two freshmen took spots in the program’s all-time best charts as well. Kati McBratney took the No. 2 time in the women’s 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:59.36, while Tyler Edlefsen claimed No. 4 in the men’s 200-yard individual medley at 1:46.49.

A handful of swimmers also received B-cut times for the NCAA Championships, including Edlefsen, Gustafson, Matta, McBratney and Stirling.

For the divers, three Cougars placed in the top 10. In the men’s 1-meter event, Kimble Mahler placed third at 288.30 and Eric Muir came in fifth at 273.95. Kennedy Cribbs took eighth in the women’s 3-meter event, scoring a 223.25.

In addition to today’s meet, Ryan Sorensen qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Tuesday, Nov. 19, during the long-course meet before the Mizzou Invitational. Sorensen posted a time 1:02.91 in the 100-meter breaststroke, earning a spot in the summer trials.

The invitational will continue Friday morning with prelims at 10 a.m. CST and finals following at 6 p.m. CST. The session will be broadcast on the SEC Network and results can be found on the BYU swim and dive page.
